Cape Byron is the most easterly point on the Australian mainland. It also a popular visitor destination. Whale watching is from July thru October. More information at (02) 6685 8807. You can drive to the lighthouse or better take the great coastal walk which starts from Wategos.
Ask any sailor aboard a half million ton oil tanker or a 10 meter sloop. They'll admit that the flash of a lighthouse across the horizon is more assuring than any modern day satellite navigation system.
The Cape Byron lighthouse was built in 1901 from pre cast concrete blocks. It is powered by a 1000 watt tungsten-halogen lamp and flashes every 15 seconds and can be seen for up to 27 nautical miles.
The lighthouse is managed by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.

Cape Byron is managed by the Cape Byron Trust
