The Tin Can Bay Dolphin

Tin Can Bay is north of Noosa Heads and just east of Gympie in Queensland, Australia. The images above were taken in November 2002 on a trip to Tin Can Bay.

The locals told me that the dolphin comes in for feeding at 8am each morning. I questioned the time 8am, does a dolphin know what time it is? Or even bother about such such things as time. I was dubious, but just in case I arrived down at the jetty and boat ramp just before 8am. Almost right on time he came swimming in to the amazement of the small crowded who'd gathered to see and feed him. The locals also told me that occasionally he doesn't arrive, but those days are rare. maybe he likes the mullet everyone feeds him. He was friendly and liked being close to humans.

From news I heard he still comes in each morning (as of December 2005) but the crowd of people to meet and feed him has become bigger. Big enough for the state government of Queensland to consider to ban people from feeding him. Enjoy the pictures, double click them to enlarge.
